Week 14: The influence of Manga & Anime in the West

Image
If you are referring to the question they asked: "do you believe in magic?" I didn't aspect the first reading to be short, but I answered the question in my head and I said, "Yes I do". The connections I made for the story are that the really quiet girl at school is struggling financially and that's why her stockings are ripped and her stomach is empty most of the time. Honestly, I like the medium a lot. When that one weird, smart kid came to the class I couldn't help but laugh because his head is so irregular shaped. And then when he actually popped off the pages just to get a glance at the girl, I can tell he's gonna be my favorite character if I can continue read more. I've read webtoons stories before and I think Annarasumanara  fits well in an online environment because at least for me, it's easier to read and its flows better.

Week 13: Manga, Anime, & Japanese cultural values

Image
I thought Oishinbo a La Carte  was really nice and a 2-in-1 type a deal. Its a manga and a recipe book! It tells you the name of the dish made and guides the reader one ingredient at a time of how to prepare it yourself. This reading reminded me of an anime I was checking out called Food Wars  and it's about a family-owned restaurant that's struggling to stay in business but business people want to take it down and build for the future. They let you know the name of the dish, ingredients and they also make it in the show and serve to customers. But the dishes are a lot more intense than Oishinbo a La Carte recipes, Food Wars sends the consumer on an emotional roller coaster that could even make your clothes come off.

Week 12: Contemporary manga

Image
The link to read the manga wasn't working and I couldn't find anything on my own either so I'll just talk about the summary. A teen kid looks for a change of life by applying to an agriculture high school in the country. Since he's so smart, he thinks they will be a walk in the part, but instead got a rude awakening at four in the morning. Over time he starts to learn the way of the agriculture and country folks do things around there. Even its comical, the teen learns real hardship and teamwork while being at the high school and his mind is more open than before.

Week 11: Horror

Image
I love me some horror! the manga Ito Juni Horror Comic Collection was pretty good. Reminds me of the book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark , a book I read a long time ago in middle school. I started off with the first chapter of the comic collection and every second of it was good, I was literally getting scared reading it. It wasn't too long, which I like for a scary story because it doesn't give you enough time to catch up on what the hell is going on. The ending was so crazy, I'm still trying to guess where was the girl who stole people's looks came from and why is she a weird insect. Even though my presentation of Inuyasha is technically horror, it doesn't compare to Ito Juni Horror Comic Collection .

Week 10: Isekai

Image
I really liked the first couple of pages in color rather than the black and white for this manga. That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime goes downhill pretty fast. A friend and a couple are having a conversation about the couples engaged and starting to plan their wedding with a close companion. All of a sudden a random person runs towards the group and was originally was going to strike the male lover, but he gets pushed out of the way by his companion he falls to the ground taking the hit for him. At this point, I'm already sad and rather not read any more of the manga but I know its only the beginning. This book is not my cup of tea.

Week 9: Cyberpunk

Image
I read Akira  and the illustrations are a totally old comic book vibe and I love it. The pages are colored at first but then quickly dims down all the way to just black and white. It starts off talking about world war three happenings but then jumps to guys on a motorcycle headed to the city and I think they are trying to shake someone off. I got lost with the reading and started from right to left, but it reads like an American book would. These bikers have a leader which I assume is also the main character all throughout the series. And looking into the details of their bike, they look way too futuristic to still be in the same time frame as the bomb so that's a cool find. I treat fictional characters like they are real, so when I saw one of the bikers get hit with some type of explosion and was badly injured, It made me worried for him if he would live or not. That's as much as I read into the manga.

Week 8: Diversity in gender & sexuality

Image
I remember reading My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness in class one day and I was not prepared for what I was about to see in this reading. For someone who has never owned or willingly read manga, this was complete to new to me versus the other manga we have discussed in class. Although I am not attracted to the same gender, you can just feel the pressure and struggle the main character is going through with natural psychological changes. There was one funny part in the first chapter where the main character accidentally creates a bald spot on top of her head and tries to cover it up with more hair combed over. I think the style is pretty sweet. The pink background and objects kinda add to the love experience. Not my type of manga but still a decent reading from what I've read.

Week 7: Shonen

Image
It might be just me but when reading the first chapter of Bakuman my eyes got lost a couple times in the order I needed to go in. Anyway, this manga caught me off guard in the beginning. I thought it was gonna be another love story, but then it quickly changes to two guys becoming mangakas. I only read several pages because it didn't grab my attention as much, but I think it's a type of manga I never heard of before.

Week 6: Shoujo

Image
What wouldn't relate more to a young girl like an anime love triangle based in a school setting than School Rumble ? This crazy love story is more seen from the male character perspective than the girls. I consider this manga Shoujo because you get a different view on the opposite gender and watch the trials and error they go through to get the girl of their dreams. Even though there are some shocking outcomes, School Rumble is quite comical and it's not just the two potential lovers either, the whole class level is in it too. So there are multiple stories to be told and the puzzle starts the form of you is attracted to who. As a person who literally watched this in early junior high, it definitely is appealing and almost a guide of what's to happen eventually.

Week 5: Romance Manga

Image
One of the Romantic animes listed that I have watched the whole thing is the fantastic Ouran Host club ! This romantic series is mainly about one particular club for males. Each character has his own style of charming women as a hobby. There are many different types of males noticed throughout the anime like "prince charming type", "cool type", and the "loli-shota type" which is played by the shortest host member. Not too long in, a female wants to join the group and it seems like an endless battle with boys trying to swoon her, but she's a hard nut to crack. The love and flirting are a bit exaggerated at times but it grabs your attention. A total of 10 out of 10, would watch again!

Week 4: Miyazaki and studio Ghibli

Image
Wow, the manga  Nausicaa Of the Valley of the Wind  looks like the type of adventure I dream of going on. It's so action pack and even though the manga is in black and white, the crosshatch and line work of art goes great with it. The mange is rough, a little realistic, completely out of this world creatures and situations.  I swear I've seen this style before in an anime where these 2 children end up in another world in the sky because of a special necklace. I only checked out the first chapter, but if I were to continue with this series, I rather see it in motion because it would be more impactful and could get an, even more, an understanding of certain scenes.

Week 3: Gekiga

Image
I personally never read or watch anime with Gekiga style illustration, only the traditional style illustrations. This particular style doesn't catch my interest in any manga or anime. It's more on the cartoony side, not as much detail but more comical. One example of what the style looks like is a manga called Cigarette Girl . It's a short story manga collection and made by the one and only Masahiko Matsumoto . Each short story is definitely weird and out the ordinary a little. Like the one where the guy literally goes to a cigarette shop just to see a girl and he doesn't even smoke.

Week 2: Osamu Tezuka

Image
Starting out on the first chapter in Ayoko soldiers from the   war come back on a ship and happy to see familiar faces again. This story focuses on one particular soldier and how so much has changed around him while he was gone. The crazy part that surprised me is when he went to the general headquarters was when he got to the office and literally take his eye patch off, and pulls out a small rolled-up note. He just stuck in hand in this empty hole where his eye is supposed to be like it was nothing! After that, he goes on traveling with the family to find out who the child is actually from and the ending of this chapter who it shocks them all.

Week 1: Four panel manga
